What happened
On September 1, 2010, a Cirrus SR2SS was operating an IFR flight from Györ, Hungary, via Vöslau, Austria, to Friedrichshafen, Germany. The flight included a planned stop at Mannheim City for refueling. At approximately 17:44 local time, the pilot reported being established on runway 27.
During the landing phase, the aircraft touched down in the final third of the runway. The aircraft failed to stop on the paved surface, overrunning the end of the asphalt by approximately 161 meters. As the aircraft left the paved area, the right wing struck a localizer antenna, causing a portion of the wing to shear off and resulting in a minor fuel leak. The aircraft eventually came to a halt against an embankment. There were no injuries to the three occupants on board.
The investigation
The BFU investigation focused on the landing parameters and the aircraft's path after touchdown. Investigators determined that the initial tire contact occurred roughly 104 meters before the end of runway 27. At the time of the incident, the landing flaps were extended. The investigation also noted that the aircraft's integrated airbag systems did not deploy during the excursion. The incident resulted in heavy damage to the aircraft and damage to ground-based navigation equipment.
