Cargo aircraft crash near Baku-Bina Airport

2 fatalities • Baku, Azerbaijan • Landing (descent or approach)

A cargo flight bound for Baku crashed following a loss of engine power during a low-altitude maneuver, resulting in two fatalities.

What happened

During a cargo operation departing from Ürümqi Airport for Baku, the flight crew identified a mechanical issue involving the left main landing gear, which failed to retract after takeoff. Despite the gear remaining in the extended position, the decision was made to proceed to the destination.

While performing a night approach to Baku-Bina Airport, the captain notified air traffic control of the situation and received clearance to perform a low-altitude pass to inspect the undercarriage. After completing this maneuver, the crew began a left turn to enter a circuit for a subsequent approach attempt.

During this low-altitude phase of flight, the four engines experienced a simultaneous loss of power. This sudden loss of thrust caused the aircraft type to descend rapidly, leading to a collision with light poles on a bridge. The aircraft subsequently crashed into a field situated approximately 9 km from the airport. The accident resulted in two fatalities and four serious injuries among the crew members.

Findings

  • The aircraft was operating with the left main landing gear stuck in the down position.
  • A total loss of power occurred across all four engines during a low-altitude turn.

Probable cause

A simultaneous loss of power in all four engines during a low-altitude approach maneuver.
