Runway excursion at Yogyakarta Airport involving flight SG416

No fatalities • Yogyakarta, Indonesia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft arriving from Jakarta overran the runway at Yogyakarta Airport following a landing in heavy rain, resulting in significant aircraft damage but no injuries.

What happened

On the arrival of flight SG416 from Jakarta, the aircraft was performing its landing sequence at Yogyakarta Airport. The flight crew completed the approach using a 30° flaps configuration. Just prior to the arrival, a thunderstorm had moved across the airport area, leaving runway 09 in a wet condition.

Upon touchdown on the wet surface, the pilot was unable to decelerate the aircraft sufficiently before the end of the runway. This led to a runway excursion where the plane overran the paved surface. During the excursion, the nose landing gear was lost, and the aircraft eventually came to a halt approximately 100 metres beyond the runway threshold.

Despite the impact and the structural damage to the airframe, all 58 occupants successfully evacuated the scene. There were 0 fatalities and 0 injuries reported following the incident.

Findings

  • The runway surface was wet due to a recent thunderstorm.
  • Poor braking action prevented the aircraft from stopping within the available runway distance.

Probable cause

Inadequate braking effectiveness on a wet runway following a thunderstorm.
