During a night flight originating from RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire, the crew was en route to Stuttgart. Due to heavy fog and poor visibility at Stuttgart-Echterdingen Airport, air traffic control instructed the aircraft to divert to Fürstenfeldbruck Airbase, located near Munich.

While navigating at a low altitude following this rerouting, the aircraft type struck the slope of Mt Teckberg. The impact occurred approximately 1.5 km east of Owen. The accident resulted in the deaths of all ten crew members.
