What happened
While performing a takeoff roll at high velocity, the captain of the B-52 elected to terminate the procedure. The specific motivation for this decision remains unidentified. Following the sudden abort, the aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently within the available runway length.
As a result of the failed stop, the aircraft exited the paved surface and traveled into a nearby field where it eventually came to a halt. The incident resulted in zero injuries to those on board; however, the structural damage sustained during the excursion was so extensive that the aircraft was declared a total loss.
Findings
- The primary factor in the overrun was the decision to abandon the takeoff at high speed.
- The aircraft lacked sufficient remaining runway distance to complete a safe stop after the procedure was interrupted.
