What happened
During a bombing mission originating from Andersen AFB, Guam, toward the A Shau Valley, a B-52 experienced a significant malfunction while flying near Vinh. An electrical system failure occurred, which subsequently led to the loss of several hydraulic systems. In response to these complications, the pilot initiated an emergency diversion to Đà Nẵng Airport.
Upon approaching runway 17L, the crew found it impossible to deploy the aircraft's flaps. Consequently, the captain performed a go-around procedure. The aircraft eventually completed a landing on the runway without the use of flaps, touching down approximately 1,000 feet beyond the threshold. After traveling 6,000 feet along the runway, the aircraft overran the surface at a speed of 100 knots. During the overrun, the plane struck a drainage ditch and impacted a landmine, resulting in an explosion.
Of the six crew members on board, five fatalities were recorded, while one gunner was successfully rescued from the wreckage.
Findings
Investigations determined that the primary reason for the accident was the simultaneous failure of both the electrical and hydraulic systems.
