B-52 Stratofortress crash near Silver Hill

6 fatalities • Silver Hill, United States of America • Flight

A B-52 Stratofortress crashed during a refueling training mission near Silver Hill, resulting in the deaths of six crew members.

What happened

During a scheduled training and aerial refueling mission originating from Dow AFB, a B-52 Stratofortress experienced a catastrophic loss of control. While flying at an altitude of 30,000 feet, the aircraft was attempting to establish contact with a USAF KC-125 for refueling operations. During this phase of flight, the pilot-in-command significantly decreased the airspeed, which led to an aerodynamic stall and subsequent entry into a steep dive.

As the aircraft descended, two members of the crew managed to successfully eject from the plane. However, the aircraft impacted the ground near Silver Hill with massive force, resulting in a large explosion. The accident resulted in six fatalities among the crew members on board.

Findings

Official investigations concluded that the primary factor in the accident was pilot error, specifically related to the excessive reduction of airspeed during the refueling approach.

Probable cause

The pilot's decision to reduce speed too drastically caused the aircraft to stall and enter an unrecoverable dive.
