What happened
While performing a flight from Wake Island toward Yokota Air Force Base in Tokyo, the aircraft was cruising at an altitude of 8,000 feet. During the transit, the crew contacted ground controllers to report their position, noting they were approximately 320 km away from the Japanese coastline. At the time of this communication, the crew indicated that the flight was proceeding normally and no issues were reported on board.
Shortly after this final transmission, the aircraft vanished from radar. No distress signals or emergency communications were received from the cockpit prior to the loss of contact. Following the disappearance, a search and rescue operation was launched, lasting eight days; however, the mission concluded without locating any wreckage or debris. All 67 occupants on board are presumed lost.
Findings
Official investigations into the disappearance were unable to reach a definitive conclusion regarding the accident due to a complete lack of physical evidence. However, records indicate that the flight was operating in adverse meteorological conditions. The area was characterized by cloud layers ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters, which included turbulence and icing conditions.
