Engine failure during initial climb leads to forced landing

No fatalities • Hamilton-Ravalli County, United States of America • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced an unexpected engine power loss shortly after takeoff, resulting in a forced landing on uneven terrain.

What happened

Shortly after departing, the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 400 feet above ground level. At this stage of the initial climb, the pilot deactivated the fuel boost pumps to prepare for the en route phase of flight. Following this action, one of the engines experienced a sudden loss of power. Due to the high weight of the aircraft, the pilot immediately feathered the propeller and began searching for a suitable landing site.

Because the area south of the airfield contained scattered residential buildings and rising terrain, the pilot was forced to maneuver the aircraft toward an open area. During the attempt to land on the uneven ground, a landing gear leg collapsed. The aircraft subsequently struck the terrain and slid into a utility pole.

Findings

An inspection of the engine and various aircraft systems conducted after the accident found no mechanical irregularities or anomalies that could have caused the engine to lose power.

Probable cause

The cause of the engine power loss remains undetermined as post-accident inspections revealed no mechanical failures.
