What happened
A scheduled flight departed from Monrovia-James Spriggs Payne Airport, bound for Freetown-Lungi Airport. The twin engine aircraft was operating with a crew of one pilot and nine passengers on board.
During the initial climb phase following takeoff, the pilot notified air traffic control that one of the engines had failed. Following this mechanical issue, the pilot intended to perform an emergency landing back at the departure airport. However, as the flight progressed, it became apparent that the aircraft could not reach the runway safely. In an attempt to avoid a more catastrophic impact, the pilot maneuvered the plane toward an open field.
Upon contact with the ground, the aircraft's undercarriage separated from the airframe, resulting in a crash. The accident resulted in two fatalities, including the pilot, and eight injuries among the remaining occupants.
Findings
Investigations into the incident determined that the primary factor was an engine failure occurring during the early stages of the climb.
