What happened
On May 16, 2005, a Britten Norman Islander, registration C6-ASA, crashed approximately 3 nautical miles northeast of Moss Town International Airport in the Bahamas. The flight, operated by Flamingo Air Limited, was traveling from Freeport, Grand Bahama, to Moss Town, Exuma, with a scheduled stop in South Bimini.
During the final leg of the journey, the pilot observed a significant drop in ground speed while flying south of Nassau. Shortly before reaching the destination, the right engine failed, followed by the failure of the left engine approximately two minutes later. The pilot attempted to locate a landing site, but the aircraft struck trees during the descent. While the impact destroyed the aircraft, the one pilot and two passengers escaped with no serious injuries.
Findings
At the time of the accident, weather conditions were within Visual Flight Rules. Investigation into the flight's fuel state revealed that while 130 gallons of fuel had been loaded the previous day, no additional fuel was added prior to the accident leg. The pilot later indicated that the primary cause of the dual engine failure was likely running out of fuel.
