What happened
On a night-time approach into Addison Airport, a twin engine airplane descended beneath the established minimum descent altitude. During this maneuver, the aircraft made contact with power cables at an altitude of approximately 36 feet above ground level. Following the impact with the lines, the plane crashed roughly 1.5 miles before reaching the runway threshold.
The accident resulted in two injuries, with both pilots sustaining minor wounds. The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified several contributing elements related to the flight conditions and crew actions. The primary factor was improper IFR operation by the flight crew. Additional contributing circumstances included:
- Poor visibility due to fog and low cloud ceilings
- Weather conditions that were below established minimums
- Errors in reading or failure to monitor flight instruments
- Inappropriate decision-making during the flight
