What happened
During the final approach phase of flight into Fort Pierce-St Lucie-County Airport, the pilot of a twin engine airplane attempted to avoid an imminent collision with another aircraft that had turned into its path. In response to this sudden obstacle, the pilot executed an evasive maneuver. During this sequence, the aircraft's airspeed decreased significantly, leading to a loss of lift.
As a result of the reduced velocity, the aircraft entered a stall and subsequently crashed. There were three people on board the aircraft at the time of the accident, all of whom sustained serious injuries during the impact.
Findings
Investigations into the crash determined that the primary factor was an aerodynamic stall occurring during a go-around attempt. This loss of control was triggered because the pilot failed to maintain sufficient flying speed while attempting to recover from the evasive action.
