Witnesses observed an airplane depart runway 35, fly in and out of clouds, then descend below trees. The airplane was destroyed. Examination found no anomalies in flight controls or engines.

Accident Details

Witnesses reported that the airplane departed from runway 35 and was observed flying in and out of clouds. The airplane then initiated a turn to the west. One witness noted that although it was dark, the silhouette of the airplane was visible. The witness observed the airplane descend below the trees. All witnesses reported flames and "fireballs" following the descent. On-scene evidence indicated that the airplane impacted trees while in a left turn. The airplane was destroyed.

Investigation Findings

An examination of the airplane, including its flight controls, engines, and remaining systems, revealed no anomalies. Weather observations and radar data indicated low clouds and restricted visibility due to rain and mist in the vicinity of the airport. A toxicological examination detected cetirizine, an antihistamine, consistent with use within the previous 12 hours. Most studies have not found significant impairment from this medication, though it is reported to cause substantial sedation in some individuals.
