What happened
During the landing roll following a routine arrival, the pilot of a Cessna aircraft reported hearing a loud bang. Immediately following this sound, the right main landing gear collapsed. There were no reported injuries or fatalities resulting from the incident.
Findings
An inspection performed by an FAA airworthiness inspector identified that a specific washer within the right main landing gear assembly had failed. A subsequent review of the maintenance history for the aircraft revealed that the operator had not implemented the instructions outlined in Cessna service information letter ME83-37, which was issued on November 23, 1983. This service letter advised the replacement of the original washers with updated components, specifically Cessna part number S1450-5H12-063 (which replaced the older part number 5045018-2). The failure to comply with this service letter was the primary factor in the component's structural failure.
