Runway overrun and aircraft fire at Canela Airport

3 fatalities • Canela, Brazil • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft overran the runway at Canela Airport during a landing in poor weather, resulting in a fatal crash and subsequent fire.

What happened

During an approach to Canela Airport, the aircraft encountered challenging meteorological conditions characterized by rainfall and visibility ranging between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. Upon touchdown, the aircraft was subject to a tailwind component of approximately 15 to 20 knots. Due to the wet surface of the 1,250-meter runway, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently within the available pavement.

As a result of the extended landing roll, the aircraft exited the runway, descended down an embankment, and crossed a nearby road. The sequence ended when the aircraft struck residential structures and ignited. The impact and subsequent fire caused the total destruction of the aircraft. There were three fatalities among the occupants.

Findings

Investigation into the accident indicates that the primary factor was the inability to stop on the wet runway due to the combination of a significant tailwind and insufficient remaining runway length.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to stop within the runway limits due to a strong tailwind and a wet runway surface.
