What happened
During an approach to runway 28 at Charallance-Óscar Machado Zuloaga Airport, the flight crew failed to maintain visual contact with the runway surface. This lack of visibility prompted the crew to execute a go-around procedure.
Shortly after the initial aborted landing, the aircraft attempted a second approach. While descending through a cloud base at approximately 800 feet, the aircraft was not correctly aligned with the runway centerline. In an effort to prevent a collision with the airport control tower, the crew initiated a right-hand turn. During this maneuver, the aircraft impacted a wooded area and subsequently caught fire. The accident resulted in two fatalities, as both pilots were killed in the crash.
Findings
Investigation details indicate that the aircraft was not properly positioned with the runway during the second approach attempt. The decision to perform a sudden turn to avoid the tower led to the impact with terrain in the nearby trees.
