What happened
During a routine return to a home airport, a private pilot executed a standard approach, touching down on the runway centerline within the designated touchdown zone. As the aircraft reached the midfield portion of the runway, it began drifting toward the right side. During the landing roll, the nose of the aircraft experienced a sudden pitch-up motion followed by a rapid descent. The aircraft then departed the runway surface, striking a runway distance marker located 1,000 feet from the end of the pavement. The aircraft continued traveling in a rightward arc until it collided with a hangar. The impact caused the hangar roof to collapse onto the aircraft type, which subsequently caught fire. No specific registration was provided for the aircraft involved.
Findings
An investigation of the wreckage showed no mechanical failures regarding the engines, steering, braking, or flight controls. Analysis of security surveillance footage revealed that the aircraft failed to decelerate while passing the midfield point of the runway; braking only appeared to be applied after the aircraft had already left the runway and entered the parking apron. While the exact configuration of the flaps during the initial landing roll could not be confirmed, they were found in the ground flap position at the time of the hangar impact. Evidence from onboard electronic devices showed that passengers and unrestrained animals, including a large dog, had access to the cockpit during the flight. While these animals could have served as a distraction during the landing phase, investigators could not definitively prove they caused the pilot's failure to brake or the subsequent excursion.
