Single-engine aircraft accident at Bazaruto Island

No fatalities • Bazaruto Island, Mozambique • Takeoff (climb)

A single-engine airplane crashed into vegetation near the runway at Bazaruto Island during takeoff operations.

What happened

During a scheduled flight from Bazaruto Island to Vilanculos, a single-engine airplane experienced a loss of directional control during its departure. The aircraft was operated with one pilot and six passengers on board at the time of the incident.

As the aircraft progressed down runway 20, it reached a distance of approximately 400 metres into the takeoff roll when it began to drift toward the left side of the runway. Despite the pilot making several attempts to regain control and correct the flight path, the plane veered off the paved surface. The aircraft subsequently struck a patch of bushes and came to a stop roughly 60 metres away from the runway centerline. The impact occurred in a direction opposite to the intended takeoff heading.

Findings

  • The aircraft departed the runway during the takeoff phase.
  • The aircraft veered to the left during the takeoff roll, leading to the excursion.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to maintain its centerline during the takeoff roll, resulting in a runway excursion into nearby vegetation.
