Landing gear collapse causes Cessna 401A excursion at MDJB

Casualties unknown • DO

A private Cessna 401A experienced a landing gear failure during touchdown at Aeropuerto Internacional Dr. Joaquín Balaguer, resulting in a runway excursion.

What happened

On May 12, 2024, at approximately 13:30 UTC, a private Cessna 401A, registration N695PG, was conducting a visual flight rules (VFR) flight from Providenciales International Airport (MBPV) to Aeropuerto Internacional Dr. Joaquín Balaguer (MDJB) in Santo Domingo.

Upon landing on runway 01 at MDJB, the left main landing gear collapsed immediately after touchdown. The aircraft traveled approximately 114 feet along the runway before veering off the left side of the pavement. The aircraft continued to slide for about 94 meters through a grassy area, where it eventually came to a stop after performing a 180-degree turn. The pilot was the sole occupant of the aircraft and was uninjured.

The investigation

The CIAA investigation is currently in its preliminary stages. Investigators have noted that the engine number one was removed from the aircraft and sent for inspection because the propellers struck the runway surface during the gear collapse. To facilitate further testing of the landing gear retraction and extension cycles, the investigation team is awaiting the installation of an operational engine on the airframe.

Probable cause

The primary cause of the accident was the collapse of the left main landing gear upon touchdown.
