What happened
On June 2, 2021, at 17:27 local time, an ATR 72-212A, registration HK5040, was performing a scheduled passenger flight from Yopal to Bogotá. During the landing phase on runway 13L at El Dorado International Airport, the aircraft experienced a partial runway excursion to the right side of the runway.
The aircraft was operating in severe weather conditions, characterized by heavy rain, hail, and reduced visibility. During the landing roll, the crew lost momentary control of the aircraft, leading to the excursion. The crew managed to regain control and steer the aircraft back onto the runway centerline. The aircraft subsequently exited the runway via taxiway A5 and proceeded to position F5, where passengers were safely disembarked. There were no injuries among the 60 occupants (56 passengers and 4 crew members). The aircraft sustained minor damage to the landing gear, and two runway edge lights were damaged during the event.
The investigation
The GRIAA investigation examined flight data, cockpit voice recordings, and meteorological reports. The investigation focused on the approach stability, the impact of the weather, and the crew's decision-making process. Investigators analyzed the aircraft's performance during the final stages of the approach, specifically looking at descent rates and airspeed deviations. The investigation also reviewed air traffic control (ATC) communications, which noted reports of hydroplaning and strong tailwinds from preceding aircraft.
