Cessna A188B runway excursion in Vichada, Colombia

Casualties unknown • Santa Rosalía, CO

A single-engine agricultural aircraft veered off the runway at Los Gansos aerodrome during landing, resulting in structural damage but no injuries.

What happened

On September 5, 2025, at approximately 07:47 local time, a Cessna A1el88B, registration HK1971, was performing agricultural spraying operations in the eastern region of Colombia. The flight originated from El Encanto aerodrome (SKNT) with the intention of proceeding to La Escondida (SQLN) to spray rice crops. During the transit, the pilot encountered deteriorating weather conditions, including heavy precipitation and reduced visibility.

To avoid the worsening weather, the pilot diverted to Los Gansos aerodrome (SQGI) in Santa Rosalía, Vichada. While landing on runway 04, the aircraft began to veer sharply to the right approximately seven seconds into the landing roll. Despite the pilot's attempts to correct the deviation using left rudder, the aircraft exited the right side of the runway. The aircraft subsequently struck a perimeter fence and a drainage ditch, causing the left main landing gear to fracture.

The pilot, the sole occupant of the aircraft, was able to shut down the engine and exit the aircraft without injury. No fire occurred during the event.

The investigation

Due to potential public order concerns in the area, the Colombian accident investigation authority (DIACC) coordinated with the operator's safety department to collect initial evidence before the aircraft could be moved to a secure location for inspection. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft was airworthy and possessed all required technical documentation for agricultural operations. The pilot held valid licenses, medical certification, and up-to-date recurrent training; post-accident drug and alcohol tests were negative.

Field inspections of the runway revealed a compact, well-maintained dirt surface with no visible defects that would have contributed to the loss of control. Marks on the runway 300 meters from the threshold indicated a rightward deviation. Inspection of the Cessna A188B revealed significant damage, including structural deformation of the left wing, a fractured left main landing gear, and propeller damage caused by impact with the ground. The investigation also noted structural deformation to the left stabilizer and elevator.

Findings

  • The aircraft experienced a sharp turn caused by contact with a drainage ditch during the landing roll.
  • The landing gear failure was a direct result of the impact with the ditch.
  • The pilot's decision to divert was prompted by deteriorating meteorological conditions, including heavy rain and low ceilings.
  • The aircraft's engine was functioning normally prior to the impact with the terrain.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the runway and struck a drainage ditch, which caused the failure of the left main landing gear and subsequent structural damage.
