What happened
During a flight originating in Rotterdam and destined for Southend, the crew received notification from Air Traffic Control that heavy fog had rendered Southend Airport inaccessible. As a result, the flight was redirected toward Lydd Airport.
While on final approach at Lydd, the pilot was unable to identify the runway due to visibility issues, necessitating an initial go-around. A subsequent attempt to land at the same airport was also aborted. While the aircraft type was maneuvering vertically over the Dungeness beaches, both engines ceased functioning.
In response to the loss of power, the crew lowered the aircraft's altitude to facilitate an emergency descent. The plane managed to reach the ground but slid a significant distance across the terrain before coming to a halt. The incident resulted in seven injuries and the total destruction of the aircraft type.
Findings
Investigations into the dual engine failure determined that the primary cause was fuel exhaustion.
