What happened
During flight through a mountain pass located near Kodiak, Alaska, an aircraft struck terrain at an elevation of approximately 1,800 feet. The impact occurred within a mountain pass that had been officially closed to traffic due to prevailing IFR weather conditions.
The collision resulted in substantial damage to the airframe. Among the occupants, the pilot and one passenger sustained serious injuries, while an additional four passengers suffered minor injuries. No fatalities were reported in the accident.
Findings
Investigations into the crash identified that the primary factor was the pilot's decision to continue flying under VFR rules despite being in known IFR conditions. This choice led directly to the collision with the rising terrain during the flight.
