What happened
On an afternoon flight originating from Milan, a twin engine aircraft was traveling toward Cortina d'Ampezzo with a scheduled stop at Venice-Marco Polo Airport. Shortly after departing from the Venice area, the flight entered the airspace above the Dolomites Mountain Range, where the crew encountered dense fog.
In an effort to regain visual reference with the terrain, the pilot initiated a descent to a lower altitude. During this maneuver, the aircraft impacted the slope of Mt Col Visentin, which stands at an elevation of 1,763 meters, within the Fadalto Valley. The debris from the impact was located on Colcanin Hill, situated north of Vittorio Veneto.
Findings
- The accident resulted in four fatalities, including both pilots and two passengers.
- One passenger sustained injuries during the crash.
- Reduced altitude in foggy conditions was the primary factor leading to the impact with the mountain slope.
