What happened

During the final approach to runway 11 at Antananarivo-Ivato Airport, the 5R-MMG (also identified by military registration 525) experienced a double engine failure. Following the loss of power, the aircraft type stalled and impacted the ground approximately 500 metres before reaching the runway threshold.

The flight was transporting a group of medical professionals, including doctors, dentists, and nurses, who were returning to Antananarivo from a humanitarian mission in Maintirano. The passengers were traveling from the island of La Réunion.

Findings

Investigations into the crash identified that the primary factor leading to the loss of control was the simultaneous failure of both engines during the approach phase.

Probable cause

The aircraft experienced a total loss of power due to the failure of both engines during its final approach.
