What happened
During the initial climb phase after departing Nassau-Oakes Field Airport, the right engine of the aircraft ignited. Upon noticing the fire, the crew notified air traffic control and requested authorization to perform an emergency return to the airfield. Despite efforts to manage the situation, the onboard crew could not successfully suppress the flames, resulting in the approach being conducted with the right engine actively burning.
As the aircraft reached the final approach stage, smoke from the fire began to infiltrate the cockpit area. Immediately following touchdown on runway 27, the intensity of the fire caused the right engine to separate from the airframe. The departing engine struck the right main landing gear, causing it to be sheared off. This mechanical failure led to a loss of directional control, forcing the aircraft to veer off the prepared surface. The plane traveled approximately 300 meters beyond the runway before coming to a final halt while engulfed in flames.
Findings
- There were no injuries reported among those on board.
- The aircraft was a total loss and subsequently written off.
- The primary factor contributing to the accident was an unextinguished engine fire that persisted through the landing phase.
