What happened
A flight originating from Tocumen Airport in Panama, destined for Central Airport in Mexico City with an intermediate stop at La Aurora Airport in Guatemala City, encountered a disaster during its transit. While passing over Managua, Nicaragua, the crew reported that the flight was proceeding normally. However, as the aircraft moved between Managua and the eastern region of the León Department, an unidentified emergency developed.
A fire broke out while the plane was still airborne. The aircraft eventually crashed into a forested area situated approximately 13 km northwest of Puerto Somoza. Upon impact, the aircraft disintegrated. There were no survivors among the 25 fatalities, which included 20 passengers and 5 crew members (comprising the flight crew and one supernumerary pilot).
Findings
Investigators were unable to pinpoint the exact source of the in-flight fire. The investigation focused on the main section of the hydraulic and fuel distribution systems, but a definitive origin could not be established without further laboratory analysis and review of maintenance records. Potential contributing factors being considered included a failure within the hydraulic or fuel systems, such as a ruptured hydraulic pressure line, electrical short circuits, or leaks originating from fuel tanks or lines.
