What happened
A flight traveling from Bolling AFB to Travis AFB, which included a scheduled stop at Akron-Canton Airport, was involved in an accident during its landing phase. While on short final approach, the four-engine airplane descended below the required altitude and struck an embankment situated approximately 50 feet before the runway threshold.
The force of the collision caused the aircraft's undercarriage to be severed from the airframe. Following the impact, the plane performed a belly landing, sliding for roughly 300 meters along the ground. The wreckage subsequently ignited, and a fire broke out that consumed the aircraft. While all 10 crew members managed to evacuate the wreckage, they sustained various injuries during the event.
Findings
Investigations into the accident concluded that the primary factor in the crash was pilot error.
