Runway overrun at Buenos Aires-Ezeiza-Ministro Pistarini Airport

No fatalities • Buenos Aires-Ezeiza-Ministro Pistarini, Argentina • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft arriving from Caracas overran the runway at Buenos Aires-Ezeiza-Ministro Pistarini Airport during heavy rain and windshear, resulting in a nose gear collapse.

What happened

During a flight originating from Caracas, the crew initiated their descent toward Buenos Aires-Ezeiza-Ministro Pistarini Airport. Upon approach, the flight encountered challenging meteorological conditions, including heavy rainfall, windshear, and a low cloud ceiling of approximately 800 feet.

The aircraft touched down approximately 750 to 800 meters beyond the runway threshold. Due to the insufficient remaining runway length on runway 35, the vessel was unable to decelerate sufficiently. As the aircraft exited the paved surface and entered soft ground, the nose landing gear collapsed. The aircraft eventually came to a complete stop 180 meters after the gear failure.

All 123 occupants were able to evacuate the aircraft without injury. While there were no fatalities, the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.

Findings

Investigation into the incident identified that the runway surface was wet at the time of the landing, which led to reduced braking action. The combination of heavy precipitation and windshear contributed to the landing being positioned too far down the runway to allow for a safe stop within the 2,800-meter available distance.

Probable cause

Reduced braking effectiveness on a wet runway following a long touchdown in heavy rain and windshear.
