What happened
During a night cargo operation originating from Miami-Intl Airport, the crew of a Lineas Aéreas Suramericanas aircraft began their approach to Bogotá-El Dorado Airport. While on final approach, the aircraft became unstable and descended below the required altitude, triggering five consecutive GPWS warnings. In an attempt to recover altitude, the captain applied additional engine power, which resulted in the aircraft flying past the intended glide path.
The aircraft reached a speed of 180 knots and crossed the threshold of runway 13L approximately 1,500 feet beyond the start of the pavement. Despite the crew initiating braking maneuvers immediately upon touchdown, the aircraft could not stop within the remaining runway length. The subsequent overrun caused the aircraft to lose its landing gear and strike ILS equipment. The impact also resulted in the loss of both the number 1 and number 3 engines. The aircraft eventually stopped in a grassy area several hundred meters from the runway.
Findings
- The aircraft was operating at an excessive speed of 180 knots during the landing phase.
- The crew's decision to increase power to regain altitude caused the aircraft to overshoot the glide slope.
- There were 0 fatalities and 0 injuries reported among the three crew members on board.
- The aircraft sustained damage beyond repair.
