What happened
A chartered flight, operating a non-scheduled route from Speke Airport in Liverpool to Tarbes Airport in Lourdes, arrived at its destination without incident. After refueling the Hawker Siddeley HS.748 for the subsequent leg to Dublin, Ireland, the aircraft departed Lourdes at 17:10 hours. The flight was carrying a total of 69 passengers and 4 crew members.
The arrival phase at Dublin proceeded normally until 20:35, when the flight contacted Dublin Air Traffic Control to receive updates regarding local weather conditions and the active runway. At 20:58, the pilot received clearance to land on runway 24, expressing an intention to execute a visual approach.
Shortly after this communication, at 21:04, the crew reported that the aircraft was experiencing power loss. In response to the deteriorating situation, the captain aborted the landing approach and performed a sharp left turn to steer the plane away from the airfield. The aircraft completed a successful emergency wheels-up landing in an area clear of the airport. While there was no fire following the impact, the incident resulted in no fatalities, though some passengers and crew sustained minor injuries.
Findings
The investigation determined that the primary factor in the loss of power was the improper management of the fuel system by the flight crew.
