What happened
During an arrival at Iquitos-Coronel Francisco Secada Vignetta Airport, a four-engine aircraft experienced a runway excursion. The aircraft made contact with the runway surface significantly further down the strip than intended. Because the runway was wet at the time of the incident, the available stopping distance was insufficient.
Upon touchdown, the crew initiated standard braking protocols; however, the momentum of the plane could not be arrested before the end of the paved surface. The aircraft subsequently overran the runway, resulting in the loss of its undercarriage. The aircraft came to a final stop several dozen meters beyond the runway threshold. While the airframe sustained damage beyond repair, all four crew members were able to evacuate the wreckage without any reported injuries.
Findings
Investigations into the incident identified that the primary factor was an incorrect approach configuration by the flight crew, which led to a touchdown point that depleted the necessary landing distance. The presence of moisture on the runway surface was noted as an additional contributing element to the inability to stop the aircraft.
