Hard landing and runway fire at Hanamaki Airport

No fatalities • Hanamaki, Japan • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced severe windshear during its final approach to Hanamaki Airport, resulting in a heavy landing and subsequent post-crash fire.

What happened

During the final approach to runway 02 at Hanamaki Airport, the aircraft was subjected to sudden downdrafts and windshear. The approach was being conducted by the co-pilot at the time of the weather disturbance. Approximately eight seconds before the scheduled touchdown, the aircraft was impacted by these atmospheric conditions. Although the captain managed to regain control of the aircraft three seconds before contact with the runway, the impact was severe, with the right main landing gear striking the surface first.

Following the heavy landing, the aircraft traveled approximately 1,860 metres along the runway before coming to a complete stop. During the sequence, a fuel tank ruptured, which triggered a fire beneath the right wing. Despite the intensity of the flames, all 76 occupants were successfully evacuated from the wreckage. Among the passengers and crew, 20 individuals sustained injuries during the event.

Findings

  • The primary factor in the accident was the occurrence of windshear and downdrafts during the short final phase of flight.
  • The structural failure of a fuel tank led to the post-impact fire.

Probable cause

The aircraft encountered sudden windshear and downdrafts during its final approach, leading to a heavy landing and subsequent fuel tank rupture.
