What happened
A four-engine aircraft was conducting a flight originating from Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, transporting various pieces of equipment along with eight crew members. While executing the final approach to Calverton-Peconic River Airport at night, the flight encountered challenging meteorological conditions characterized by rain showers and crosswinds.
During this phase of the flight, the aircraft made contact with trees and subsequently crashed in a wooded region situated approximately one mile before reaching the runway. The impact resulted in a fire upon landing. The accident resulted in six fatalities and left two crew members seriously injured.
