What happened
A twin-engine aircraft departed Manaus-Eduardo Gomes Airport destined for Carauari with two pilots and 15 passengers on board. Approximately 50 minutes after takeoff, while the aircraft was cruising at 8,500 feet, the right engine ceased operation. Despite multiple attempts by the crew to restart the engine, the failure persisted. Following notification to air traffic control, the flight was cleared to divert to Coari Airport, which was situated roughly 37 km from the aircraft's position.
During the approach to runway 28 at Coari Airport, the aircraft was operating under a state of being overloaded and with one engine inoperative. Consequently, the crew maintained a speed exceeding the reference speed. The aircraft touched down approximately 700 meters past the threshold of the 1,600-meter runway. Upon landing, the crew lost directional control, causing the plane to veer toward the left side of the runway. The aircraft subsequently struck a drainage ditch, which caused the undercarriage to detach. The plane came to a stop 20 meters after the ditch. While all 17 occupants were successfully evacuated, nine people sustained injuries. The twin-engine aircraft was determined to be a total loss due to damage.
Findings
- The aircraft was operating with an overload condition and one engine inoperative.
- The approach speed was higher than the recommended reference speed.
- The landing distance was excessive, resulting in touchdown far down the runway.
