What happened
While operating a flight from Tefé to Eirunépé, the flight crew encountered worsening weather conditions. In response to the deteriorating environment, the decision was made to divert the flight to the uncontrolled Envira Airport.
During the approach, the aircraft was operating in heavy rainfall. The aircraft touched down approximately 500 metres beyond the runway threshold. Upon making contact with the surface, the crew attempted to initiate braking; however, the runway was experiencing aquaplaning conditions. Consequently, the aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently within the available runway length. The aircraft overran the end of the runway and eventually came to a stop in a ravine located 100 metres from the runway exit.
Findings
- The aircraft encountered significant hydroplaning during the landing phase.
- The incident resulted in one serious injury to the captain and one minor injury to the co-pilot.
- All 16 passengers on board were able to evacuate the aircraft without injury.
