What happened
During the initial climb phase following departure from Runway 22 at Paipa-Juan Jose Rondon Airport, a twin engine airplane experienced significant issues maintaining altitude. Approximately three kilometers from the airfield, the aircraft flew dangerously low over residential buildings and forested areas. In an attempt to maneuver, the pilot initiated a turn to the left, during which the tip of the left wing made contact with the ground. The impact triggered a post-crash fire.
Of the people on board, 17 individuals died in the immediate aftermath of the accident. While 5 occupants were initially pulled from the wreckage, 4 of those survivors succumbed to their injuries the following day, bringing the total death toll to 21 fatalities.
Findings
Investigations into the accident revealed that the aircraft was operating significantly over its permitted limits. The plane's takeoff weight was recorded at 6,491 kilograms, which exceeded the maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) by approximately 821 kilograms. This overloading of the aircraft was identified as a primary factor in the flight's inability to gain sufficient height.
