Runway excursion at Mandera Airfield

No fatalities • Mandera, Kenya • Landing (descent or approach)

A twin-engine aircraft failed to stop after landing on a dirt runway at Mandera Airfield, resulting in a collision with trees and a perimeter fence.

What happened

On the date of the incident, a twin engine airplane arrived at Mandera Airfield for landing. The aircraft touched down on a dirt runway; however, the pilot was unable to bring the plane to a complete stop before the end of the available runway surface.

As the aircraft continued along the unpaved strip, it exited the runway area and struck a perimeter fence constructed of concrete posts. The momentum of the aircraft also caused it to collide with nearby trees. Despite the impact with the fencing and vegetation, all 36 occupants on board were able to exit the aircraft without injury. No fatalities or injuries were reported following the evacuation.

Findings

  • The aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently during the landing roll.
  • The overrun led to contact with fixed objects, specifically trees and a concrete post fence.

Probable cause

The aircraft was unable to stop within the remaining length of the dirt runway after touchdown.
