What happened
On 25 September 2003, a Europa XS, registration G-CBWF, was involved in an accident at Wombleton, near Pickering, Yorkshire. The flight was part of a formation flying exercise that included several other Europa aircraft. During the mission, the aircraft owner occupied the right-hand seat for the duration of the flight but did not participate in the flight operations.
Following the conclusion of the formation maneuvers, the commander performed a 'touch and go' landing at Kirbymoorside. Upon arriving in the circuit at Wombleton, the commander offered the owner the opportunity to perform the landing. The owner, who elected to observe the landing rather than fly, subsequently witnessed the aircraft sustain damage during the landing phase.
The investigation
The investigation examined the experience levels of the crew and the circumstances surrounding the pilot's proficiency. It was established that while the commander possessed experience in formation flying, he was not current on the Europa XS type.
Further inquiry into the passenger's role revealed that the owner believed the pilot was experienced on this specific aircraft type. This impression was reinforced by the successful execution of the previous landing at Kirbymoorside. Additionally, the investigation clarified that the event organizers had mandated the use of an experienced formation pilot for the exercise, and the owner had been introduced to the commander under the assumption that he was proficient on the aircraft type.
