What happened
On 23 October 2010, a Europa XS, registration G-KDCC, was performing a private flight from a private airstrip at Sewards Hall Farm, near Dunmow, Essex. The flight lasted approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Following a discussion with a passenger, the pilot elected to land on Runway 04, despite the wind favoring Runway 22.
During the approach, the pilot experienced pilot-induced oscillations. As the aircraft approached the runway, the pilot applied power in an attempt to manage the landing, following a technique he believed was necessary. However, the aircraft failed to settle correctly, and the passenger suggested a go-around. The pilot applied power, but the aircraft continued past the end of the runway, ultimately colliding with a fence. The impact caused damage to the wings, propeller, and fuselage. There were no injuries to the pilot or the passenger.
The investigation
The AAIB investigation was prompted by third-party reports of the accident. Investigators examined the pilot's recent flying history and the aircraft's maintenance records. It was noted that the aircraft had recently undergone repairs following a previous heavy landing and had passed a check flight shortly before the accident.
Investigators also reviewed the pilot's landing techniques and the instructions provided in the aircraft's Owner's Manual. The manual advised a smooth reduction of power over the threshold to flare and touch down, but it did not explicitly state whether the throttle should remain closed or if power should be maintained during the landing phase. Furthermore, the investigation looked into the pilot's recent experience, noting that he had not completed three takeoffs and landings within the previous 90 days.
