What happened
During a scheduled flight from Athens-Elefterios Venizelos Airport to Rome, the crew of the aircraft reported a burning odor inside the cabin, suggesting the presence of smoke. In response to this emergency, the flight crew notified Air Traffic Control and decided to divert the flight to Brindisi-Papola Casale Airport.
At the time of the diversion, the destination airport was experiencing adverse weather conditions, characterized by heavy rain and significant crosswinds. Additionally, the primary runway, 14/32, was unavailable for use due to ongoing maintenance work. Consequently, the aircraft landed on runway 23.
Following the touchdown, the aircraft experienced a skid and drifted off the runway surface. During the excursion, the right main landing gear was lost. The aircraft sustained extensive damage to the right wing and the right side of the fuselage, resulting in the airframe being declared a total loss. The aircraft was a new addition to the fleet, having only completed 100 flight hours since its delivery earlier this year.
Findings
- The landing occurred during periods of strong crosswinds and rain.
- Three passengers and three crew members were on board the flight.
- The incident resulted in three injuries, with the occupants being transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor wounds.
