Fletcher aircraft crash near Owhakatoro Station

1 fatality • Taneatua, New Zealand • Takeoff (climb)

A Fletcher aircraft crashed into a steep slope during a sowing run near Owhakatoro Station, resulting in the death of the pilot.

What happened

During its twenty-sixth flight of the morning, a Fletcher departed normally at approximately 09:12. While performing a sowing run, the flow of mixture from the aircraft's hopper stopped abruptly. Shortly after this, the plane began a right-hand turn that transitioned into a steep dive. The aircraft disappeared behind a nearby ridge, followed by the sound of an impact.

The wreckage was located roughly 1.75 miles from the Owhakatoro Station airstrip. The impact forces completely destroyed the aircraft, though no fire was reported at the scene. Investigation of the crash site revealed that the plane hit the face of a steep slope before settling in a swampy gully approximately 40 feet below. Evidence from the right wing tip, which matched a mark on the slope, indicated the aircraft had been in a bank of 78 degrees to the right. The pilot was killed instantly upon impact.

At the time of the accident, weather conditions were characterized by clear visibility and calm, smooth air.

Findings

An examination of the engine and airframe showed no evidence of mechanical failure or defects prior to the crash. Witness testimony indicated that the engine was producing normal power during the period when the diving turn began. Investigators determined that sudden physical incapacitation of the pilot was the most likely cause of the accident.

Probable cause

The most likely cause of the accident was the sudden physical incapacitation of the pilot.
