Flight Design CT2K departs runway at Kilkeel Airfield

Casualties unknown • Kilkeel Airfield, Northern Ireland, GB

A private Flight Design CT2K experienced a loss of directional control following touchdown, resulting in a runway excursion and damage to the aircraft's left wing.

What happened

On 16 April 2011, a Flight Design CT2K, registration G-CBAI, was performing a private flight at Kilkeel Airfield in Northern Ireland. During the landing sequence on Runway 18, the pilot observed a light to moderate wind from approximately 300°. After initially deciding to perform a go-around due to being high on the approach, the pilot repositioned for a landing on Runway 36, configuring the aircraft with 40° flaps.

Upon touchdown on the main wheels, the aircraft began drifting toward the left side of the runway centerline. The pilot attempted to correct this movement using aileron and right rudder inputs; however, the controls reportedly felt locked and unresponsive. The aircraft subsequently left the runway surface and entered a long grass area. While traveling at approximately 10 kt, the left wing of the aircraft struck a wooden windsock pole, which caused the aircraft to veer sharply to the left and come to a stop. There were no injuries to the pilot or the passenger, though the aircraft sustained damage to the left wing root and leading edge.

The investigation

The AAIB examined the aircraft's mechanical systems following the incident. Investigators checked the rudder and the nosewheel steering mechanism to determine if a mechanical failure had caused the loss of control. The investigation established that while the rudder and steering were slightly stiff, they remained fully functional and no mechanical defects were identified.

Findings

  • The pilot noted a perceived lack of rudder authority at low airspeeds and power settings in this specific aircraft type compared to other microlights.
  • The controls became unresponsive to corrective inputs during the landing roll.
  • The aircraft's left wing struck a windsock pole, causing the final direction change and halting the excursion.

Probable cause

The aircraft departed the runway centerline following touchdown due to the pilot's inability to maintain directional control, despite the mechanical functionality of the rudder and nosewheel steering.
