Nose gear failure during approach to Astana Airport

No fatalities • Astana, Kazakhstan • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced a nose landing gear malfunction during its descent to Astana, resulting in a landing on runway 22 and the loss of the airframe.

What happened

During a flight originating from Kyzylorda, the flight crew began their descent toward Astana Airport and prepared the aircraft for arrival. While performing the landing configuration, the crew deployed the landing gear; however, the nose gear failed to extend from its wheel well.

Upon realizing the nose gear was stuck, the captain aborted the initial approach and performed a go-around. While flying in a holding pattern, the crew attempted to manually deploy the gear, but the mechanism remained non-functional. After approximately 50 minutes of circling the airport, the decision was made to proceed with a landing despite the gear configuration.

The aircraft touched down on runway 22. Following the impact with the runway, the plane slid for several dozen meters before coming to a complete stop. Although the aircraft sustained damage beyond repair, all 121 occupants were able to evacuate the aircraft without injury.

Findings

  • The nose landing gear remained stuck in the wheel well despite attempts at manual deployment.

Probable cause

The nose landing gear failed to extend from the wheel well during the landing configuration process.
