What happened
During the final approach to runway 28, the flight crew determined that the aircraft was not properly positioned for landing. In response, the captain attempted a go-around procedure by increasing power to the engines.
During this transition, the right engine transitioned into an auto-feather state. This loss of power caused the aircraft to lose both altitude and airspeed. Consequently, the plane struck the ground 860 metres before reaching the runway threshold, landing approximately 90 metres to the left of the extended centerline.
The accident resulted in 29 fatalities. Among the survivors, there were nine injuries, involving eight passengers and one crew member.
