What happened
During the final approach phase toward runway 28 at Palam Airport in New Delhi, the flight encountered extreme meteorological conditions. The aircraft was subjected to heavy rainfall, significant turbulence, and intense storm activity characterized by windshear.
As the plane progressed on its final approach, the pilot-in-command lost control of the aircraft type due to powerful downdrafts. This loss of control resulted in a crash approximately 3 km before reaching the runway threshold. The impact led to the total destruction of the aircraft. Among the occupants, there was 1 fatality and 22 injuries recorded.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified that the primary factor in the loss of control was the encounter with severe atmospheric disturbances. Specifically, the combination of downdrafts, turbulence, and suspected windshear during the approach phase prevented the crew from maintaining stable flight.
