Aircraft stall and runway excursion during takeoff

No fatalities • Panama City-Marcos A. Gelabert (Albrook AFB), Panama • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced a stall shortly after takeoff, resulting in a runway overrun and significant damage to the airframe.

What happened

During the initial climb phase following departure from runway 36, the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 50 feet. At this stage of the flight, the crew initiated the retraction of the landing gear. This action coincided with an aerodynamic stall of the aircraft type.

Following the stall, the aircraft descended back toward the runway surface, touching down roughly 380 meters beyond the runway threshold. The momentum of the aircraft caused it to slide along the runway surface before overrunning the paved area. The aircraft then veered toward the left, eventually coming to a halt in a grassy field located about 60 meters past the end of the runway.

Findings

  • The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
  • Despite the severity of the excursion, all 13 occupants managed to exit the aircraft without sustaining any injuries.

Probable cause

The aircraft entered a stall condition immediately after the crew began retracting the landing gear during the climb.
