Aircraft overrun during aborted takeoff at Nairobi-Wilson Airport

No fatalities • Nairobi-Wilson, Kenya • Takeoff (climb)

A twin-engine aircraft experienced an overrun during a post-maintenance test flight at Nairobi-Wilson Airport, resulting in minor injuries and heavy damage.

What happened

During a local test flight following maintenance procedures, a twin-engine aircraft departed from Nairobi-Wilson Airport. The flight crew, which included two pilots and two engineers, was performing a routine check of the aircraft's systems.

As the aircraft was accelerating down runway 07, the captain initiated an aborted takeoff. The aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently before the end of the runway, leading to an excursion. The aircraft overran the runway, breached a perimeter fence, and suffered the loss of its nose landing gear before coming to a halt in an adjacent field.

Findings

All four occupants of the aircraft managed to exit the wreckage and sustained only minor injuries. While the crew remained safe, the aircraft sustained damage that was determined to be beyond repair.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to stop within the available runway length following an aborted takeoff.
