What happened
On June 3, 2016, a Fokker 27/Mk600, registration 5Y-FMM, was performing a cargo ferry flight from Mogadishu to Garbaharrey Airport. The flight, operated by Safari Express Cargo Ltd on behalf of the WFP, was transporting relief supplies when the accident occurred during the landing phase.
During the short final approach, the aircraft struck an obstacle measuring roughly two meters in height. This impact caused the right-hand main landing gear to collapse upon touchdown. Following the gear failure, the aircraft experienced a runway excursion toward the starboard side. During this excursion, the right wing made contact with the ground, resulting in a portion of the wing being severed. This structural failure led to a fuel leak and the ignition of a fire. Additionally, the four propeller blades on the starboard engine struck the ground, causing them to bend rearward. The fire was successfully suppressed before it could spread extensively.
Findings
- The primary cause of the landing gear collapse was the collision with a two-meter-high obstacle during the final approach.
- There were 0 fatalities and 0 injuries reported, as all four crew members evacuated the aircraft safely.
- The aircraft was determined to be a total loss due to damage beyond repair.
